Today I did something I’ve needed to do for a long time—I got moving. I went for a walk and covered over a mile, then headed to the exercise room at my apartment complex. It was only the second time I’ve been in there, and I spent some time doing various exercises with weights.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized just how much strength I’ve lost over the years. Your body really does change once you get into your sixties. I’ll be turning 65 in August, and it’s becoming clearer to me how important exercise is as we age. If you want to stay healthy and maintain your independence, you can’t spend all your time sitting in a chair or on the couch.

The good news is that it’s never too late to start. No matter your age, getting up, moving, and staying active can make a real difference in your health and quality of life. Today was a step in the right direction for me, and I’m looking forward to taking many more.

That’s a great milestone—over a mile walked and some strength training is a solid start. Consistency matters more than intensity, especially when building a new routine.
